Performance Considerations

High ambient light sources, such as surgical lights
(especially those with a xenon light source), bilirubin
lamps, fluorescent lights, infrared heating lamps, and
direct sunlight can interfere with the performance of an
SpO
2
O
XI
M
AX
sensor. To prevent interference from
ambient light, ensure that the O
XI
M
AX
sensor is properly
applied, and cover the O
XI
M
AX
sensor site with opaque
material.
WARNING: Failure to cover the O
XI
M
AX
sensor site
with opaque material in high ambient light conditions
may result in inaccurate measurements.
If patient movement presents a problem, try one or more
of the following remedies to correct the problem.
• verify that the O
XI
M
AX
sensor is properly and
securely applied
• move the O
XI
M
AX
sensor to a less active site
• use an adhesive O
XI
M
AX
sensor that tolerates some
patient motion
• use a new O
XI
M
AX
sensor with fresh adhesive
backing
If poor perfusion affects performance, consider using the
MAX-R
O
XI
M
AX
sensor or the MAX-FAST O
XI
M
AX
sensor. The MAX-R O
XI
M
AX
sensor obtains
measurements from the nasal septal anterior ethmoid
artery, an artery supplied by the internal carotid. These

sensors may obtain measurements when
peripheral perfusion is relatively poor.
