5.1
Maintenance Coordination.
All coordination with the mechanics in the
À
ight station, cargo compartment, center
wing rear and front beams, and hydraulic and electrical power controls require a positive response that these mechanics
properly understand the action to be taken; repeat back the action to be taken; and con
¿
rm that the action is complete.
Failure to comply could cause injury to personnel.
5.2
Fluids, Solids, and Soiled Rag Disposal.
A suitable approved container must be used to drain residual
À
uids. All
residual
À
uids, residual solids, and soiled rags shall be disposed of in accordance with local HAZMAT instructions.
5.3
Fall Protection.
Fall protection is required if working from maintenance stands or on top of airplane. Comply with
local instructions.
5.4
Restraint Devices.
Restraint devices shall be worn by all personnel working at elevated heights as directed by Air
Force Office of Safety and Health (AFOSH) standards. Connect anchor strap to structural anchor points only, as identi
¿
ed in
TO 1C-5M-2-1, Chapter 1. Do not disconnect restraint anchor strap unless relocating to another position or exiting down the
stand/ladder. Failure to comply could result in injury or death.
5.5
Hoisting and Lowering.
Care must be exercised when conducting hoisting and lowering operations in winds or gusts
of 10 knots or more. Failure to control loads could result in injury or death to personnel or damage to equipment.
5.6
Heavy Objects.
Use caution when lifting heavy objects. Maintenance procedures in this manual identify heavy Line
Replaceable Units (LRU) and the actions to prevent personal injury. Regardless of LRU labeling, objects weighing over 37
pounds require more than one person or mechanical assistance to lift.
5.7
Foreign Object Control.
Any objects dropped during the performance of a task shall be retrieved immediately. Bolt
bags will be used to store all removed hardware. All tools, equipment, and hardware used during a task shall be accounted
for at the completion of the task. An inspection for foreign objects shall be conducted prior to installing panels or doors
using a strong light to ensure the area and surrounding area is free of foreign objects. An aggressive foreign object control
program must be utilized to prevent damage to engine and components.
5.8
Burns.
If Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) or engine has been operated recently, surrounding structural areas may be hot
enough to cause burns. Refer to TO 1C-5M-2-1, Chapter 1, for danger areas.
6
WARNING.
The following warnings must be understood and applied during maintenance operations to ensure personnel safety. When
necessary, warnings are repeated elsewhere in this manual to emphasize a particular situation. Additional warnings, unique to
a situation and not listed here, may also be used for greater emphasis.
•
Always bring the airplane to a safe condition before beginning any maintenance procedure.
•
Wireless Intercom for Aircraft Ground Operations (WIAGO) devices transmit radio frequency signals and shall
not be operated within 5 feet of Electro Explosive Devices (EED). WIAGO devices shall not be used within
safety zones for LOX or fuel servicing operations, near any fuel spill, open fuel line or fuel vent outlet.
•
When performing maintenance in the relief crew compartment or aft troop compartment, if emergency escape/
service door No. 5 or No. 6 is open ensure that adequate safety precautions have been taken. Ensure that
service door restraint gates have been installed in accordance with instructions in TO 1C-5M-2-2-1, Chapter 3.
If the restraint gates cannot be installed for any reason, ensure that a work stand has been placed outside and
level with the open door. Failure to comply could result in serious injury to personnel.
•
If any of the service liquids (fuel, hydraulic
À
uid, oil, etc.) contact the skin of personnel, the affected area must
be washed immediately with hot, soapy water to avoid irritation.
