1.5.5.3
External Electrical Power.
Before connecting external electrical power at temperatures of -45 °F (-43 °C) and
below, apply heat to the bus protection panel in the aft load center for 15 minutes.
1.5.5.4
Batteries.
If airplane is exposed to temperatures below -15 °F (-26 °C) for more than 1 hour or temperatures
below 0 °F (-18 °C) for more than 4 hours, remove aircraft and APU batteries and store in heated, protected area. Refer to
TO 1C-5M-2-7-1, Chapter 3, for battery removal and installation instructions. If batteries are not warmed, APU may not start
during battery only (no external power available) operations.
1.5.5.5
Avionics Equipment.
Continuous operation of core avionics equipment (greater than 30 minutes) should be maintained in the tempera-
ture range of 5 °F (-15 °C) and 131 °F (55 °C). Operation of core avionics equipment outside this range will result
in damage to the equipment.
a. During sub-zero weather, do not start up the core avionics equipment until
À
ight station and avionics bay compart-
ments are warmed above -40 °F (-40 °C).
b. For continuous operation (greater than 30 minutes) the
À
ight station and avionics bay compartments are warmed above
5 °F (-15 °C).
c. Following exposure of the airplane to ground temperatures below -25 °F (-32 °C), ensure that functional checks of
avionics equipment have been accomplished after sufficient warming (about 20 to 30 minutes) of the
À
ight station and
equipment compartments. Since cargo compartment warming will be negligible, the avionics equipment compartment
doors may be opened to receive heat from forward upper deck warm-up.
d. The auxiliary maintenance computer (AMC) contains a thermal power switch and will not operate when the computer
temperature is below 5 °F (-15 °C). If the unit is below 5 °F (-15 °C), the amber TEMP light on the front of the AMC
will illuminate and power will be applied to the AMC to aid in warm-up. Once the internal temperature is above 5 °F
(-15 °C) or 15 minutes in this warm-up mode has elapsed, the AMC will begin full operation.
e. Any unit that contains an LCD display (fuel gage, MFDU, MCDU, PCIU, standby attitude indicator, etc.) may not be
capable of displaying information until the display itself has warmed to a more moderate temperature.
