General Maintenance
Tighten leaking connections and/or replace defective hoses.
5.
Verify cylinder rods:
5 a.
Make sure that cylinder rod ends are clear of debris.
5 b.
Make sure that cylinder rods have no scratches that may cause the cylinder to leak oil.
Should you find oil leaks, the cylinder must be replaced immediately.
N
OTE
:
During the warranty period,
do not
attempt to change cylinder seals and packing.
6.
Check the packer for vertical and horizontal movements. See
page 128 for correct procedure.
If the packer shows vertical or horizontal movement, wear pads need to be replaced. Extensive
wear on the hopper floor also suggests that sliding shoes require immediate replacement (see
7.
Verify packer panel for knocking noises.
Knocking noises indicate that the Extend proximity switch requires adjustment (see
Packer Extend Proximity Switch
on page 202). Proper adjustment is necessary to prevent cylinders
from bottoming out under pressure.
8.
Make sure that hydraulic cylinders are not leaking internally (resulting in insufficient packing
power). For more information, see
Detecting Cylinder Internal Leaks
Preparing Packer for Removal
N
OTE
:
Preparing packer for removal is the first step of a five-part process of replacing a packer. The
others are the following: Accessing Packer, Disconnecting Packer, Removing Packer Panel
and Installing New Packer. This process varies with different models of E
XPERT
™ trucks:
standard units with loading arm (A), standard units without loading arm (B), co-mingle units
with loading arm (C), co-mingle units without loading arm (D), and dual H

units (E).

page 47; for co-mingle units w/o loading arm, go to page 49; for dual Helping-Hand units, go
to page 49.
Danger!
Defective or worn-out hoses can burst and cause a major fire. Hydraulic leaks can also
cause fire due to hot pressurized hydraulic fluid flowing inside pipes and hoses. Do not
underestimate these fire hazards. Replace old and worn-out hoses with new ones without
delay and tighten fittings that are leaking. Also take note of the following: never loosen/
tighten fittings unless pressure has been taken off the lines. Do not use your hands to find
hydraulic leaks. Use proper gloves and eye wear when checking for leaks. Failure to follow
these safety precautions may result in serious injury or death or damage to the
equipment.
