Tier 1 Test Example
We give here an example of a typical Tier 1 Test / Acceptance /
Certification test. Prior to this, the organization needs to determine the
required test standard, test method, and ensure trained & accredited
staff are available.
We assume a two-way Autotest (bi-directional) test method. This is
faster and easier than a one-way Autotest test method, adds length
(and ORL if available) testing, and is the “highest” loss test method
available, accepted by all standards. Just hook-up one fiber up at a
time, once only.
It is noticeable that a good part of this testing is up to personnel and
associated procedures. The equipment plays a role in supporting
“Tier
1 Testing
” but
is not in itself adequate to ensure compliance.
Don’t do this test until you are confident that the relevant physical
cabling/ labelling and related site aspects are “stable”.
Post-test physical site access needs consideration. The system may
get
“accepted” but then
later, someone unplugs and re-plugs a
connection, then it may fail due to dirt etc. This is when the blame
game starts

Prepare equipment:

Ensure your tester has required

Check inspection & cleaning materials & qty available

Check you have materials needed to secure or identify post-
test access to site, closets, racks, ducts, connections etc.

Determine project labelling sequence to be used

Determine number of fibers to be tested
✓
Verify exact test method(s)
✓
Check and verify operation with the required referencing
method(s) (1, 2 ,3 fiber etc)

If helpful, restrict the instrument test

Check, label & document test leads, test through adaptors
& verify their performance. Maybe have separate low-grade
leads to be used for continuity & polarity checking.

Ensure equipment familiarity, including communications
methods

Set up test pass/fail parameters in the instrument
