Assembly Notes
• Assemble axle shaft bearings in reverse order of
removal.
• Clean and inspect axle shaft bearings and seals (2
and 4) for wear or damage. Replace as needed.
• Apply grease that meets or exceeds NLGI Grade 2
LB specifications to the lips of axle shaft seals (4)
prior to installation.
• Install axle shaft seals in the axle housing (10) to a
depth of 1.125 in. (28.6 mm) between the face of the
axle housing and the outer face of the axle shaft
seals.
• Pack bearings (2) with grease that meets or exceeds
NLGI Grade 2 LB specifications prior to installation.
• Install axle shaft bearings onto axle shafts until
seated against axle shaft shoulder using a suitable
press.
• Use a suitable driver to install axle shaft and bearing
assemblies until firmly seated against snap rings (3).
Rotate shaft during installation to engage splines if
necessary.
Differential Ball Bearings Removal

CAUTION
1. Remove front wheels. (See “Front Wheels” on
page 7-14.)
2. Remove front wheel hubs. (See “Front Wheel Hub”
on page 5-19.)
3. Remove snap ring (1) from right-side axle shaft (18).
4. Remove right-side axle shaft and bearing assembly
(18 and 2) using a suitable puller.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the left-side axle shaft and
bearing assembly (11 and 2).
NOTE
Have a suitable container available that can hold up to
0.2 gal (0.75 L) of axle fluid.
6. Place a suitable container under the axle housing to
receive axle fluid.
7. Remove ten cover plate screws (16).
8. Remove cover (17) from axle housing (10).
NOTE
Bearing caps (12) are marked with letters or numbers in
horizontal and vertical positions. Note position of bearing
caps and replace in original position during assembly.
9. Remove four bearing cap screws (13) and two
bearing caps (12).
10. Remove differential case assembly (15) from axle
housing (10).
11. Remove differential ball bearings (14) from each side
of differential case using a suitable puller.
Assembly Notes
• Assemble differential ball bearings in reverse order of
removal.
• Clean and inspect differential ball bearings (14) for
wear or damage. Replace as needed.
• Lubricate differential ball bearings (14) with Mobilfluid
424 or SAE 30 oil prior to installation.
• Install bearing caps in their original positions. Torque
bearing cap screws to 35–45 lb-ft (3.4–5.1 N·m).
• Clean cover and axle housing surfaces of gasket
material. Apply a bead of non-acidic silicone sealant
to flange of cover and inside of cover mounting holes.
• Torque cover screws to 16–25 lb-ft (1.8–2.7 N·m).
Input Shaft Ball Bearings Removal

CAUTION
1. Remove front wheels. (See “Front Wheels” on
page 7-14.)
2. Remove front wheel hubs. (See “Front Wheel Hub”
on page 5-19.)
3. Remove snap ring (5).
4. Remove input shaft and ball bearings assembly (8, 7,
and 9).
NOTE
The input shaft and bearing assembly should remove
easily. Use a suitable puller if resistance is encountered.
5. Remove input shaft ball bearings (7 and 9) using a
suitable puller.
6. Remove and discard O-ring (6) from axle housing
(10).
