Appendix 4 Glossary
Logical Printer
A logical printer acts as a filter between the network and the physical
printer. It appears to the user as a normal printer with additional
characteristics. For example a UNIX workstation may only send a
line feed (LF) to a shared printer that needs carriage return (CR) and
LF. The logical printer can solve this problem by adding a CR.
LPD
Line Printer Daemon.
LPR
Line Printer.
MAC address
Media Access Control address. Also called hardware address,
Ethernet address, and node address. Based on the unique serial
number of a NIC (Network Interface Card). The serial number is
usually organised in couples of digits with space, hyphen, or colon
characters between each couple. Do not confuse with Mac as in
Macintosh!
MIB
Management Information Base. A database of network configuration
information used by SNMP and CMIP to monitor or change network
settings.
MVS
Multiple Virtual Storage, an operating system installed on most of
IBM's mainframe computers.
NBT
NetBIOS over TCP/IP protocol.
NCP
NetWare Core Protocol. Network clients use the NCP to request
services of servers, and servers use NCP to provide services, such as
file and print services.
NDS
NetWare Directory Services. Manages network resources such as
NetWare servers and volumes.
NetBEUI
NetBEUI is an acronym for NetBIOS Extended User Interface. A
transport protocol for NetBIOS used e.g. by all of Microsoft's
network systems.
NetBIOS
BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. An application
programming interface for network operations on PCs running
under Microsoft's DOS.
NetWare
NetWare is a proprietary network operating system from Novell,
Inc. It supports e.g. MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, and Unix
clients using IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, or TCP/IP protocols.
Node address
See Mac address.
Peer-to-peer printing
Printing from a host computer on a printer without involving any file
server.
