Preface
This book provides information for configuring an IBM
®
ServeRAID
™
controller,
installing device drivers, and installing and using the ServeRAID utility programs
and the IBM ServeRAID Cluster Solution.
Note: The IBM ServeRAID product can be either a controller on an adapter, such
as the one in this option package, or a controller on the system board of
your server. For consistency in this manual, the ServeRAID product is
referred to as a ServeRAID controller, unless it is specifically noted
otherwise.
To install device drivers and utility programs for a RAID controller that comes
as a standard feature on an IBM server system board, see the
Installation
Guide and CDs provided with your server for instructions.
How this book is organized
Chapter 1, “Product information” on page 3 contains introductory information and
specifications for the IBM ServeRAID-4H, ServeRAID-4Mx, ServeRAID-4Lx, and
ServeRAID-5i controllers.
Chapter 2, “Installing and cabling a ServeRAID controller” on page 11 explains how
to install and cable a ServeRAID-4 and ServeRAID-5i controller.
Chapter 3, “Understanding RAID technology” on page 21 contains general
information about RAID technology.
Chapter 4, “Configuring ServeRAID controllers” on page 35 explains the ServeRAID
configuration process. You can refer to the information when configuring one or
more devices attached to a ServeRAID controller.
Chapter 5, “Installing ServeRAID device drivers” on page 49 contains information
about installing and updating the ServeRAID device drivers.
Chapter 6, “Configuring two ServeRAID controllers in a failover environment” on
page 51 contains instructions for configuring two ServeRAID controllers in a failover
environment. These instructions are for Microsoft
®
Windows NT
®
4.0 and Microsoft
Windows
®
2000 only.
Chapter 7, “Using the ServeRAID Mini-Configuration program” on page 67,
Chapter 8, “Installing and using the IPSSEND command-line program” on page 71,
and Chapter 9, “Using the IPSMON command-line program (NetWare only)” on
page 91 contain instructions for installing, starting, and using the Mini-Configuration,
IPSSEND, and IPSMON programs. You can use these operating-system-specific
programs to maintain and monitor your ServeRAID subsystem.
Chapter 10, “Installing and starting the ServeRAID Manager program” on page 93
contains instructions for installing and starting the ServeRAID Manager program.
You can use this program to maintain and monitor your ServeRAID subsystem.
Chapter 11, “Introduction to the IBM ServeRAID Cluster Solution” on page 103 and
Chapter 12, “Preparing to install or change a cluster solution” on page 107 provide
general information about the IBM ServeRAID Cluster Solution, including terms,
definitions, and considerations.
