guration best practices
•
Maintain detailed records of your iSCSI storage network, including information about the
initiators, targets (including which LUNs are mapped to the targets), IP address assignments, and
portals and portal groups. Be sure to note which initiators are accessing which targets through
which portal groups using which IP addresses and protected by which Access Control List (ACL)
and virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN).
•
When con
fi
guring switches, consider setting up VLANs to control access to the MSA1510i
storage targets. For installation and con
fi
guration instructions, see the documentation included
with the switch.
•
For optimum performance from the MSA1510i, use 1000BaseT switches and quali
fi
ed Category
5e (or better) Ethernet cables.
•
Record information about the switches that will connect to the MSA1510i using the
Network switch
information
worksheet in the MSA1510i installation and user guide
•
Ensure that initiators and targets are on the same Layer 2 Ethernet LAN. This guarantees the
integrity of the data traf
fi
c and maintains high network performance levels.
•
Develop an IP addressing scheme for the management and data ports of the controller in slot 1 (the
front right slot), and the management and data ports of the controller in slot 2 (the front left slot).
•
When con
fi
guring the management and the data ports, assign the appropriate IP addresses to
the ports according to your IP addressing scheme.
•
When con
fi
guring the portals and portal groups, and mapping the LUNs to a portal group,
con
fi
gure the mapping to manually load balance ownership of the LUNs between the portal
groups (which are assigned to the physical data ports.

guration overview
Primary con
fi
guration tasks
Regardless of the management tool used or operating system environment, the following tasks must be
completed:
•
Obtaining, installing, and con
fi
guring initiator and multipathing software components.
•
Updating MSA controller
fi
rmware. (If necessary. See “
Updating MSA
fi
rmware
” on page 79.)
IMPORTANT:
MSA1510i v1.32 or earlier is active/passive
fi
rmware. For active/active, you must update the
fi
rmware
to v2.0 or later. To upgrade your system to active/active, obtain the MSA1510i Support CD from the
MSA1510i Support page:
http://www.hp.com/go/support
. Upgrade instructions are provided on
the CD.
•
Con
fi
guring the MSA and its storage.
• Changing the default IP address assigned to the management port of each controller (usually MA0
and MB0) to be in the same LAN segment as the network servers. (If necessary.) (See
“
Changing the management port IP address through the MSA1510i controller display panel
” on page 102.)
• Creating the logical storage units (LUNs).
• Entering global controller settings, such as setting the read/write cache ratio, setting the
rebuild/expand priority, and setting the redundancy level.
• Identifying the operating system type (also called Host Mode or Pro
fi
le) of each initiator that will
access the MSA. This ensures that the MSA will communicate properly with that host.
• Verifying that the desired initiators are detected by the MSA.
• Creating Access Control Lists (ACLs) to isolate the storage from unauthorized access. These settings
indicate, by NIC, which LUNs the NIC can access.
