Installing Hardware Options
Processors and PPMs
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server supports up to four Intel Xeon Processors
MP. With two or more processors installed, the server supports boot functions
through the processor installed in processor socket 1. If two or more processors are
installed and processor 1 fails, the server automatically boots from the next available
processor (after the system boots, it will indicate that processor 1 failed).
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server uses processor power modules (PPMs) to
provide the proper power to each processor. Each PPM must be installed in the slot
adjacent to its processor.
CAUTION:
Processor socket 1 and PPM slot 1 must always be populated. If either
is missing, the system interlock indicates the missing components, and the system
will not boot.
CAUTION:
If processors of differing speeds are installed, each processor matches
the rated speed of the slowest processor.
CAUTION:
Install a PPM for each processor in the system. When installing a new
processor, you must also install a new PPM.
CAUTION:
To be sure that the system ROM recognizes the new processor you are
installing, update the ROM. For the most recent ROMPaq, refer to the HP website
and follow the support link on the product website.
Failure to flash the ROM before installing processors can cause system failure.
CAUTION:
Electrostatic discharge can damage electronic components. Properly
ground yourself before beginning any installation procedure. Refer to Appendix B,
“Electrostatic Discharge,” for more information.
