DIMM Installation Requirements
In addition to the DIMM configuration requirements for advanced ECC memory,
observe the following DIMM configuration requirements when installing DIMMs for
hot-plug mirrored memory:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Two memory boards must be installed.
Both memory boards must be configured identically. Corresponding banks (for
instance, bank A on the memory board in slot 1 and bank A on the memory board
in slot 2) must be populated with DIMMs of the same capacity.
Observe the following DIMM configuration requirements when performing a hot
replacement:
Do not remove the memory board unless the “Ready to Hot Plug” LED is green.
If you replace a DIMM, the new DIMM must be a PC1600 registered ECC DDR
SDRAM DIMM of the same capacity as the DIMM you are replacing.
For a complete description of a hot-plug procedure, refer to “Installation, Removal,
and Replacement Procedures” in this chapter.
Hot-Add Memory Functionality
Hot-Add functionality allows you to upgrade the amount of memory or add advanced
memory protection to the server without powering down or rebooting the server. This
functionality eliminates server downtime and service interruption when performing a
memory upgrade.
Features
Hot-Add memory functionality can be used in two ways:
An additional memory board of the same configuration as the existing board can
be installed into the available slot on a server configured for Advanced ECC
mode, in effect doubling the amount of memory in the server.
If a server is pre-configured for Dual-Board Hot-Plug Memory Mirroring mode,
the second memory board functions as a mirror of the first one when added.
