Electrostatic Discharge Information
Electrostatic disc harge (ESD) can damage or destroy electronic comp onen ts. Therefore,
all w ork p erformed on assem blies consisting of electronic comp onen ts should b e done at a
static-safe w orkstation.
A static-safe w orkstation can use t w o t yp es of ESD protection: 1) conductiv e table mat and
wrist strap com bination, and 2) conductiv e o or mat and heel strap com bination. These
metho ds may b e used together or separately . (A list of static-safe accessories and their part
n um b ers is given on the follo wing pages.)
Reducing Damage Caused By ESD
Belo w are suggestions that may help reduce ESD damage that o ccurs during testing and
servicing instrumen ts.
PC Board Assemblies and Electronic Components
Handle these items at a static-safe w orkstation.
Store or transp ort these items in static-shielding con tainers.
Caution
Do not use erasers to clean the edge connector con tacts. Erasers generate
static electricit y and remov e the thin gold plating, whic h degrades the
electrical qualit y of the con tacts.
Do not use pap er of an y kind to clean the edge connector con tacts. P ap er
or lint particles left on the con tact surface can cause in termitten t electrical
connections.
Do not touc h the edge connector con tacts or trace surfaces with bare hands.
Alwa ys handle b oard assem blies b y the edges.
PC b oard assem bly edge connector con tacts may b e cleaned b y using a lint-free cloth with a
solution of 80% electronics-grade isopropyl alcohol and 20% deionized w ater. This pro cedure
should b e p erformed at a static-safe w orkstation.
T est Equipment
Before connecting an y coaxial cable to an instrumen t connector for the rst time eac h da y ,
momen tarily ground the cen ter and outer conductors of the cable.
P ersonnel should b e grounded with a resistor-isolated wrist strap b efore touc hing the cen ter
pin of an y connector and b efore removing an y assem bly from the instrumen t.
Be sure that all instrumen ts are prop erly earth-grounded to prev en t buildup of static c harge.
