Before installing an ETHER-1000 unit in the shelf:
a) Calculate the power budget. Ensure there is enough power supplied to
the shelf to sustain the added power consumption of the ETHER-1000 unit
and its paddleboard. Depending on the number and type of SFP
transceivers installed, the ETHER-1000 power consumption may range
from 8 to 14 W (refer to the
Specifications
section for more details). The
power budget calculation shall be made for the situation when one of the
power supply units along the power bus (which may include multiple
shelves) fails.
b) Verify that the 087-86430-90 subassembly (used to extend the JVT/DS0
channel bus
27
on the shelf back plane) is not installed underneath nor on
either side of the ETHER-1000 unit paddleboard.
The ETHER-1000 unit can be inserted and removed from the shelf with shelf
power applied; however, certain precautions should be taken before inserting or
removing the unit from a system in service. Refer to sections
Replacing ETHER-
1000 Unit in a System in Service
and
Adding ETHER-1000 Unit in a System in
Service
before taking any action.
Backwards Compatibility
The ETHER-1000 firmware Version 3 unit (released in June 2011) is not
backwards compatible with Version 1. The Version 2 and Version 3 units are
compatible to the extent that they can operate in the same network, however, a
V2 unit configuration cannot be pasted into a V3 unit or vice versa. Refer to
Appendix F for more information.
Ring and Linear Network
At a
node in a ring network or add/drop (intermediate) node in a linear network
,
the left and right Line ports on the ETHER-1000 unit are connected to a CBW
port on the left and right OC-3/OC-12/OC-48 JMUX units, respectively.
28
If two “cascaded” ETHER-1000 units are to be equipped at a node (4 shelf slots
should be allocated), the connection between the units is made from the right
CBW port of the left unit to the left CBW port of the right unit.
27
Referred to as JVT bus in applications with JIF-Share and legacy JIF units. After CDAX unit
introduction, this bus is referred to as DS0 channel bus or just CBUS.
28
In some special situations these connections need to be opposite. In particular, when ETHER-
1000 traffic is passed between rings using Right-to-Right and Left-to-Left CBW-tie connections,
the Left and Right ports of ETHER-1000 units residing at nodes in one of the two rings are
connected to the right and left OC-3/OC-12/OC-48 JMUX units, respectively.
