IPv4 and IPv6
IPv4 frames are identified by having the Ethernet “Type” field set to 0x0800, and
the TOS field is the 6 bits following the 8-bits after the Type field.
Virtually all “IP” frames encountered by the end users are IPv4 frames; however,
their 32-bit address limitation has prompted a switch to IPv6 frames with 64-bit
addresses.
IPv6 frames are identified by having the Ethernet “Type” field set to 0x86DD, and
the TOS field is the 6 bits following the 4-bits after the Type field (these 6 bits are
sometimes called the “TC” for “Traffic Class” field).
The 86498-94 paddleboard's Marvell switch chip supports both IPv4 and IPv6
frames (for TOS monitoring).
