5. Remove, inspect, and clean inboard journal, outboard journal, and thrust bearings (see PUMP
DISASSEMBLY: BEARINGS and INSPECTION, CLEANING, AND REPAIR:
BEARINGS).
6. Drain, then clean lower halves of bearing housings with a petroleum base solvent; do not
remove bearing housings.
7. Drain, then clean (or flush) with a petroleum base solvent all of the following equipment that
is applicable to the lube oil system of your pump:
a. lube oil cooler,
b. reservoir,
c. filter,
and
d. filter
housing.
8. Install inboard journal, outboard journal, and thrust bearings according to instructions under
PUMP ASSEMBLY: BEARINGS.
9. Operate pump (see STARTUP and OPERATION) for approximately 2 hours, then shut it
down (see STOPPING). Check lube oil filter for sludge and foreign matter such as scale and
slag. If filter is even partially clogged from any matter, clean and reinstall filter; then repeat
above steps 1 through 8: filter shall be clear of sludge, scale, and the like before the pump is
put on line for extended operation.
3.5.2 SEAL PIPING
Whenever work is performed on seal flush piping (other than disconnection at terminal points) or new
piping is fabricated, it is essential to clean and flush the piping. Additionally, it is usually necessary to
preserve carbon steel piping from rust.
3.5.2.1 Carbon Steel Piping
Following rework or fabrication of carbon steel piping, to protect the seal from rust, scale, welding
shot, grit and other foreign material, Flowserve recommends:
1. sandblasting inside and outside of piping to remove varnish and welding slag,
2. thoroughly flushing and air blasting inside of piping to assure removal of sand and debris,
3. cleaning in hot alkaline bath and rinse,
4. pickling in ten percent sulfuric acid solution and rinse,
5. immersing in phosphate bath (Parkerize 100 or equivalent) and rinse,
6. final rinse in chromic acid solution and oven dry.
3.5.2.2 Stainless Steel Piping
Following rework or fabrication of stainless steel piping, to protect the seal from welding shot, grit,
and other foreign material, Flowserve recommends:
1. sandblasting inside and outside of piping to remove varnish and welding slag, and
2. thoroughly flushing and air blasting inside of piping to assure removal of sand and debris.
