3.11  Stepper Motor 

The media is driven by a Stepper Motor which drives the media in a 
direction perpendicular to the length of the plotter.  The media in the 
plotter can advance forward and backward, depending upon the 
commands which the Stepper Motor receives from the microprocessor. 

The Stepper Motor drive contains two identical circuits, one for each 
winding of the stepper motor.  The circuit is a combination of two 
simpler types of circuits and can be thought of as a variation of either 
one. 

The first is a switching power supply, but in this case the current rather 
than the voltage is regulated.  Instead of output capacitors to filter 
voltage ripple, output inductance in the form of the motor winding filters 
current ripple.  The other type of circuit is a bipolar chopper drive which 
is commonly used for driving stepper and servo motors. 

In both cases, the circuit has the additional feature that the reference 
varies with time so that a waveform is generated rather than a steady 
state signal.
