For a protective earth test performed at 25 amps, ES601
Plus
measures the actual current flowing
through the DUT ground circuit and the potential developed across the circuit, and then calculates
and displays the resistance once per second. The total duration of the measurement is 10 seconds as
required by the IEC60601 and IEC61010 standards. To determine whether the DUT passes the test,
ES601
Plus
compares the highest resistance value observed during the procedure to the specified
limit.
When testing at 25 amps in multiple PE mode, and after the first resistance value of the test is
recorded, the measurement duration is then shortened from 10 to 3 seconds for the remainder of
the protocol. The reduced measurement interval minimizes the risk of overheating the connections
and changing the resistance of the test cables, which could potentially invalidate the measurement
results.
WARNING:
You must be careful to ensure you are using a Protective Earth (PE) connection during the 25
amp test.
A true PE connection is designed to conduct in excess of 25 amps. However, exposed metal parts
or terminals on the DUT may be Functional Earth (FE) connections, which are designed to
function as a circuit ground return path at relatively low currents.
If the 25 amp test current from ES601
Plus
is allowed to pass through a FE connection, there may
be damage to the DUT such as burning of internal components or other failures. If in doubt,
contact the DUT manufacturer or supplier for guidance.
