Introduction
As the cinema industry makes the transition from film to digital projection, around the world people are
recognizing the advantages of incorporating DTS timecode into the digital cinema file server. Driving a Datasat
Digital Entertainment (DDE) or DTS player from the DTS timecode output of a digital cinema server is a very
useful scheme for allowing the use of the DTS-CSS or XD10 functions of Subtitling, Narration, and open or closed
captions.
To accomplish this, the digital cinema server must source DTS timecode to the player. This specification details
where the DTS timecode is to be recorded on the master to ensure proper sync and avoid interference with the
existing 5.1 Audio, and outlines the proper setup to playback access discs or standard DTS film soundtracks in a
digital cinema environment.
Timecode Setup for Digital Cinema Distribution Masters (DCDM)
DTS timecode is placed on the selected channels of the DCDM. Audio description, if available, is also placed on
the selected channels of the DCDM. Then the transfer, handling, and packaging of the DTS timecode track and
audio description can be done simultaneously with the 5.1 audio.
3. Playback Setup
DTS timecode is recorded at -10dbFS as a digital audio track on the selected channel of the digital feature. The
player requires an analog timecode signal; if the timecode channel is delivered digitally then an external digital to
analog converter (D/A) is required.
DTS captioning, narration, subtitling and audio are wired as normal.
System Requirements:
Playback system XD10 or CSS for captioning and narration. DTS-6, DTS-6D, DTS-6AD for audio only playback
(alternate language).
Digital cinema server with channel 1-8 audio outputs.
D to A converter if the timecode output channel is digital. AES/EBU 48K and 96K 24bit, such as RDL’s HR-

Follow this procedure to provide playback:
A. Connect the timecode input of the DDE or DTS theater playback unit to the analog output of the
designated timecode channel of the digital cinema server. If a D/A audio converter is used, then
connect to the output of the D/A converter. All DDE or DTS playback systems have two timecode
inputs – projector 1 and projector 2 – route the timecode input to projector 1 if you will not be using
film. If you will be switching between film and digital and only have one film projector (no change
over) you can use input 2 to avoid swapping cables. The DTS-6AD has 2 timecode connectors that use
pin 1 for input. All other DDE or DTS players use pin 1 for projector 1 and pin 2 for projector 2. DTS-
6s and DTS-6Ds require an internal jumper change to enable the projector 2 input; see your manual for
jumper instructions.
