Chapter 1 Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch Overview
System Features
Redundancy and High-Availability
Two Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switches can be configured to achieve redundancy. A typical example of a
redundant configuration is to attach a server with a two-port HCA to two IB switch modules on two
separate Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switches (see
Figure 1-1
).

Redundancy with Two Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switches
The Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch can be used in a variety of networking environments, including
database tiers, application tiers, and web tiers. The Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch provides 20 Gbps per
port connectivity to servers, 1 Gbps per-port connectivity to Ethernet networks, and 4 Gbps per-port
connectivity to Fibre Channel networks. You can also aggregate uplinks for greater bandwidth and
redundancy.
Scalability
A total of up to four gateways can be populated in each chassis. You can populate the data connection
end of the Cisco SFS 3504 Server Switch with additional Fibre Channel gateways and Ethernet gateways
to increase the port count of your server switch. Each additional Fibre Channel gateway adds four Fibre
Channel ports at 4 Gbps per-port connectivity. Each additional Ethernet gateway adds six Ethernet ports
at 1 Gbps per- port connectivity.
