9A) in S erv ice Manual ST -331-71 is applicable to m odels covered by
th is supplem ent. The follow ing inform ation and illu str a tio n s a ls o apply.
STEERING GEARS
On all steerin g g ea rs covered in this supple
ment w ill have the sid e cover attached to the main
housing with flange type cap sc r e w s.
On steerin g g ea rs 553DV, the stub end of the
ste e rin g gear worm shaft (fig. 1) w ill have a cro ss
groove and a section of the serra tio n s machined
flat. With the steerin g gear centered, the steering
interm ediate shaft clamp yoke and clam p bolt can
only be in stalled one way.
STEERING TIE ROD
V eh icles covered in this supplem ent have a
th r e e -p ie c e tie rod connecting left and right s te e r
ing a rm s. The tie rod a ssem b ly (fig s. 2 and 3)
c o n s ists of a tube and two socket end a sse m b lie s.
Socket end a sse m b lie s are threaded into tube and
locked in p lace with clam ps. Right- and left-hand
threads are provided to fa cilita te to e -in adjustm ent.
The tie rod ends are non-repairable and r e
quire lubrication as sp ec ifie d in LUBRICATION
(SEC. 0) and inspection to s e e that ball studs are
tight. Socket ends should be replaced when e x c e s s
ive up and down motion or any lo st motion or end
play at ball end of stud e x is ts .

ARE
IMPORTANT
ATTACHING
PARTS IN THAT THEY COULD AFFECT THE
PERFORMANCE OF VITAL COMPONENTS AND
SYSTEMS, AND/OR COULD RESULT IN MAJOR
REPAIR EXPENSE. THEY MUST BE REPLACED
WITH PARTS OF THE SAME PART NUMBERS OR
WITH EQUIVALENT PARTS IF REPLACEMENT
BECOMES NECESSARY. DO NOT USE REPLACE
MENT PARTS OF LESSER QUALITY OR SUBSTI
TUTE DESIGN. TORQUE VALUES MUST BE USED
AS SPECIFIED DURING REASSEMBLY TO ASSURE
PROPER RETENTION OF THESE PARTS.
