T his is a p o sitiv e indication that the cap nuts
a r e , or have been, lo o s e . In th is c a se , the a s s e m
bly should be checked carefu lly b ecau se damage
to hub, stu d s, or w heel may have been caused by
running in th is condition.
Damaged or Sprung R ings
Broken or cracked rin gs as shown in figu re 7,
are gen erally caused by rough u se of tir e to o ls or
im proper in itia l seatin g in gutter of rim . When
found, the ring should be rep laced . Bent or sprung
rings are caused by rough and im proper rem oval of
this part and cannot be p rop erly sprung back so as
to seat a ccu rately in the rim gutter. They should
be replaced.
C racked or Eroded Side R ings (F ig. 8)
C racks through sid e ring, spreading la tera lly
through the entire se c tio n . T h ese a re caused by
im proper mounting and demounting techniques, im
pact with road ob stru ction s, and e x c e s s iv e clam p
ing torques.
