INSTALLING PLASTIC LIMITER CAPS
NOTE: The carburetor must be in sta lled on
the engine and properly adjusted prior to in s ta ll
ation of the p la stic caps.
1. Thoroughly warm up the engine. B e su re
choke is open.
2. Check dw ell reading and adjust, if n e c e s
sa r y . D w ell reading on 366 and 427 V8 engines
should be 28 to 32 d eg re es.
3. Adjust ignition tim ing to 8°BTDC.
FUEL SYSTEM—GASOLINE ENGINES
4. Adjust engine idle sp eed sc r e w (fig. 13)
until engine id le speed is 600 rpm.
5. With engine running at idle sp eed , adjust
id le m ixture sc r e w s to give highest steady idle
sp eed .
6. Readjust engine id le speed as d escrib ed in
Step 4 to 600 rpm.
7. Turn id le m ixture sc r e w s IN, equally, by
rotating clo ck w ise to LEAN m ixture until the en
gine id le sp eed reach es 550 rpm.
8. R eferrin g to figure 18, p la stic caps must
be in sta lled so that e a rs on cap a re aligned with
b o ss on secondary throttle body. Then ca refu lly
push p la stic cap onto each id le m ixture sc r e w (se e
fig . 19) until it snaps into p osition .
BENDIX—STROMBERG CARBURETOR
The B endix-Strom berg carburetor (W W Series)
as shown in figu re 20, is in stalled on 351C engine.
The m ost sign ifican t change externally on the
carburetor is the addition of p la stic lim ite r caps
which a re in sta lled over each of the idle m ixture
s c r e w s .

ADJUSTMENTS
IDLE AND MIXTURE ADJUSTMENT
P r e lim in a ry Checks
1. Thoroughly w arm up the engine. B e su re
the choke is open.
2. B e su re the carburetor is properly secu red
to the intake m anifold, which w ill exclude the p o s
s ib ility of air le a k s. C arb u retor-to-m an ifold b olts
or nuts should be tightened to 20-25 foot-pounds
torque.
3. Inspect the m anifold heat control valve (if
used) for freedom of action and c o rrect spring
ten sion .
4. A ir conditioning, when used , should be
turned on during the carburetor adjustm ents.
5. Check dwell reading and adjust, if n e c e s
sa r y . D w ell reading on V6 engines should be 31 to
34 d e g r e e s.
6. Adjust ignition tim ing with vacuum advance
hose disconnected and plugged to 7^°BTDC. R e
connect vacuum advance hose.
C arburetor Adjustment
1.
Engine idle sp eed for the 351C engine should
be adjusted to 650 rpm by perform ing the following:
a.
R eferrin g to figure 21, place a %-inch open
end wrench on diaphragm extension of vacuum id le
stop to prevent its rotation w hile adjusting plunger.

b.
Adjust the plunger with a 3 /8 -in c h open end
w rench until the fa ce of the plunger hex contacting
the carburetor throttle le v e r r e su lts in the id le
sp eed given e a r lie r in Step 1.
2. Rotate id le m ixture sc r e w s cou n terclo ck
w ise until tang on each p la stic cap con tacts ro ll
pin in throttle body of carburetor as shown in V iew
B ,figu re 20.
3. R eset the id le sp eed as d irected in Step 1.
4. Turn "in" idle m ixture s c r e w s equally by
rotating clo ck w ise to LEAN m ixture until the f o l
low ing idle sp eed rea ch es 600 rpm.
5. With engine running, vacuum id le stop hose
discon n ected , check reduced engine rpm . The r e
duced engine speed should be 400 rpm . If n e c e s
sa r y , adjust id le speed sc r e w (View A, fig . 20) to
obtain 400 rpm . R econnect vacuum id le stop h o se.
FLOAT LEVEL ADJUSTMENT
1. R em ove air clea n er and d isconnect choke
and a c c e le ra to r linkage and fuel line fro m carb u r
eto r . D isconnect fast id le link and a c c e le ra to r
pump rod.
2. R em ove carb u reto r-to -m a n ifo ld retaining
b o lts or nuts, then rem ove carburetor fro m engine.
3. R eferrin g to View A, figure 20, rem ove
sc r e w s from top of air horn. Separate a ir horn and
th rottle body from main body of carb u retor. C a re
fully pour fuel from float bowl.
4. Hold main body inverted as shown in figure
22. T his w ill allow weight of float to hold needle in
the clo sed p osition . U se float gauge (J-8824) to
