ExAmpLE OF TrEATmENT
Many patients have difficulty tolerating traction because of postural deformities (such as lateral shift) that prevent them from lying
comfortably on a standard, flat treatment table. The 3D ActiveTrac table is designed to be adjustable to accommodate painful
postures. What’s more, you can begin treatment in the abnormal posture, and while traction is being applied, gradually move the 3D
table into a more neutral position
(SEE PRECAUTIONS BELOW)
.
A common example of a postural deformity is the flexed, laterally shifted posture one often sees with herniated lumbar disc. Attempts
to lie in a neutral position cause an increase in back pain and/or peripheral symptoms. A clinical goal would be to enable the patient
to lie prone, so that extension principles can be applied. However, the patient cannot lie prone or correct the lateral shift without
increased symptoms. With the 3D ActiveTrac, you can accomplish the goal. Here’s how:
For this example, a patient with a flexed, laterally shifted posture will be treated in prone. Move the lumbar section down, then side
bend and rotate the table to accommodate the patient’s abnormal posture. Assist the patient in getting on the table in the prone
position. Make further adjustments if necessary until the patient is as comfortable as possible.
Continue patient set up, following the instructions in the
Operations Section. For herniated disc, we recommend the static
mode, relatively short treatment times and high treatment forces.
An ideal treatment session,
ONCE THE PATIENT IS USED TO
TRACTION,
would be a 10 minute treatment time, with at least
50% of the body weight. If the symptoms are fairly acute and
irritable, try starting with a 5 minute session, at forces 1/3 to
1/2 the body weight. A one to two minute ramp up and ramp
down will help the patient tolerate the new sensation of traction.
The Pause feature of the 3D ActiveTrac will allow you to adjust
the treatment time and force midway through the treatment.
