Troubleshooting the Film Coater
Table 5-1 Film Coater Troubleshooting
Problem
Possible Cause
Corrective Action
1. Fluid leaks from nozzle
or seat (film coater off)
Contamination preventing needle
from seating properly
Use purge program to completely
flush film coater. If film coater still
leaks, remove nozzle holder, nozzle
nut, tilt lever, and tilt link. Clean
nozzle holder and nozzle nut in
appropriate solvent. Use solvent
and brush to clean extension end
and needle tip. Inspect all parts and
replace as necessary. Rebuild film
coater and test.
Needle binding
Manually trigger film coater. Check
for smooth needle operation. Clean
needle or purge film coater as
necessary.
Worn needle and seat
Disassemble film coater to
completely remove needle. Inspect
needle and seat. Replace if worn.
Rebuild film coater using all new O-
rings and seals.
2. Fluid leaks from nozzle
or seat (film coater on)
Nozzle not securely tightened on
extension
Wrench-tighten nozzle on
extension. Be careful not to over-
tighten nozzle.
Damaged O-ring between nozzle
holder and extension
Remove nozzle holder and inspect
O-ring. Replace O-ring if necessary.
Make sure O-ring is properly
seated.
Teflon seal in nozzle damaged or
improperly seated
Remove nozzle. Inspect seal.
Replace seal if necessary. Make
sure seal is properly seated.
Teflon seal in nozzle nut (if used)
damaged or improperly seated
Remove nozzle nut. Inspect seal.
Replace seal if necessary. Make
sure seal is properly seated.
3. Film coater spits fluid
Partially blocked needle or seat
orifice, or damaged nozzle, nozzle
nut, or tilt mechanism
Remove and clean nozzle, nozzle
nut, or tilt mechanism with
appropriate solvent. Use solvent
and brush to clean extension end
and needle tip. Check all parts for
damage and replace if necessary.
