D.1 Beacon Types and Definitions
The following paragraphs describe the four beacon types and the
associated implications.
Type 1: Set recovery Mode (highest)
This beacon type essentially means that the adapter card
recognizes that something is wrong with it and that it is no longer
capable of forwarding frames. (T.I. token ring adapter chip does
not produce this type of beacon.)
Type 2: Signal Loss
The beaconing adapter card detects no incoming signal. It implies
that the wire is broken somewhere between the beaconing station
and its NAUN.
Type 3: Bit Streaming (lowest)
The beaconing adapter card detects some type of signal coming in
but cannot recognize any data. This implies a signal degradation
due to incorrect wiring specifications.
Type 4: Contention Streaming (lowest)
The beaconing adapter card detects a signal and an occasional
Claim Token MAC, but it does not recognize quite enough to get
the ring started. This indicates a marginal ring (a Gemini) that can
likely recover from the condition. This indicates that the ring is
not quite stable, but it will likely run for a while.
