Establishing Modem Connections
You initialize a connection via a remote modem by selecting Dial from
the Communications menu. A Utility Phone Book window appears;
whereupon, you can give the location you are calling a Name, Telephone
Number, and Baud Rate. You can save this data for future reference. You
click on the Dial button to initiate a call (see Figure 5-11).
After you select the Dial button, you should see a string of characters,
including the telephone number, appear on the bar in the lower-left
corner of the screen. This information bar keeps track of your call
initialization status.
If you do not see the call progressing, you need to check your
configuration. Be sure you have Modem selected in your Comm Port
window (select Comm in the Configuration menu). While you have the
Comm Port window open, verify that you have the proper baud rate and
port number selected. Then select Modem from the Configuration menu,
and verify that you have the proper modem selected.
If you see the outgoing dial command on the status bar of the window but
do not see the OK acknowledgment from the modem, you may have a
bad or improper cable. Cables for DTE to DCE (wired straight through)
should be used for the PC-to-modem and modem-to-SmartLine
connections (see Appendix A and Section 3.4).
After you make the modem connection to the SmartLine units, operation
duplicates that of a direct connection.
