D.2 Soft Error Types and Definitions
MAC Abort. This error is caused by an internal error in a PC station
or from a corrupted token on the ring. It can also be caused by
stations inserting onto or removing from the ring. If no stations are
inserting/removing, check the cabling between the reporting station
and the NAUN, and then check the adapter card on the reporting
station.
MAC AC. The most probable cause of this error is noise on the line.
Check the cabling between the reporting station and the NAUN.
MAC Burst. When a PC station inserts onto or removes from the
ring, the relay on the adapter card causes a “burst” on the ring when
the relay opens or closes. MAC bursts represent a problem when
there are no station ring insertions or removals. Check the adapter
card in the reporting station and the NAUN. Cabling between the
two stations may also be faulty.
MAC Congestion. The most probable causes of this error is that the
reporting station does not have enough buffer space to receive data,
or it does not have its drivers properly installed. Occasional MAC
Congestion errors from PC station are not serious. However, if a
server, a router, or a bridge is the reporting device, it should have its
buffer size increased to improve overall throughput and
performance.
MAC Copied. This error occurs when duplicate device MAC
addresses are detected on the ring. This condition should be
corrected immediately. This condition occurs only when duplicate
locally-administered addresses, or names, have been assigned to two
or more devices or stations on the network (for example, two PCs
named “John’s PC”). This condition will not occur if all of the
devices on the token ring network are using their IEEE globally-
administered MAC addresses.
MAC Error. When a station detects an invalid character in a frame
or token, it transmits this error. This condition can be caused by
tokens inserting or removing from the ring, network line noise,
