Configuring 4-Port Line Cards
169
The most common organization is left to right, top to bottom — the first
port in the top-most line card receives the first line card port extension
and the incoming telephone line that will ring first.
You can configure the NBX 100 to behave in any one of the three
traditional telephone system modes described in the following list. Keep
this information in mind when you configure Line Card ports.
■
Key mode
CO lines map to individual buttons on users’ telephones. To configure
key mode behavior through NetSet, you use Button Mappings and the
Auto Extension setting for each line card port. Button Mappings let
you map a line card port extension to a specific Access button on a
telephone. Button Mappings identify the telephones that ring when a
call comes in on the mapped CO line. Auto Extension specifies the
destination of a call that is not answered at any of the telephones.
■
PBX mode
CO lines are pooled and arbitrated by the call processor. The CO lines
do not map to individual telephones. All incoming calls go first to an
Attendant Console or the Automated Attendant. If the call goes to
the Attendant Console, the receptionist forwards the call to the user’s
extension, or if the user is out of the office, the call can be sent directly
to the user’s voice mailbox. To call an outside number, a user must dial
the line pool access number, typically 9, and the NCP assigns the next
available line. PBX mode allows you to make maximum use of a
limited number of CO lines.
■
Hybrid mode Combines key mode and PBX mode — some CO lines
are mapped directly to telephones, while the rest are pooled.
PBX mode is the easiest configuration to set up and manage. Key mode
requires more configuration because you must map the CO lines to
telephones.
By using pooled lines, mapped lines, an Attendant Console, and the
Automated Attendant, you can configure the NBX 100 to support a wide
range of operational requirements.
For the following procedure, you need the list of line card port MAC
addresses you created when you installed the line cards in the chassis.
