The function of the
Snap Folders
is to integrate the folding of the case minor and major flaps within the shortest
possible time and travel distance. In each
Snap Folder
module, the rear minor flap and major flap folders are
activated through a single mechanical, progressively linked drive system powered by a pneumatic cylinder.
The right and left
Snap Folder
modules are secured to their respective mounting brackets with three machine
screws into the top face of the folder body. The modules can be removed for servicing, if necessary, after
disconnecting the air supply lines.
To service each module, remove the stainless steel face cover. All of the parts required to service the
Snap Folder
are contained in the standard BEL 270 Spare Parts & Maintenance Kit (BELCOR Part number 70-225).
After replacing any worn parts, it may be necessary to reset the
Snap Folder
Exhaust Flow Valve (seen below)
located outside the housing at the rear end of each module. The purpose of this flow control is to regulate the
speed of the minor folder ‘hook’ so that it employs a following action to fold down the rear minor flap. This
should be set to operate as quickly as possible without striking the case flaps prematurely and damaging them.
A timer, housed in the main control enclosure usually located on the left side of the machine, determines the
length of time that the
Snap Folder
mechanisms dwell in the forward position. This ensures that the flaps do not
spring open before they are captured beneath the flap guides ahead of the compression press. This timer is factory
set and should not need routine adjustment.
The return stroke of the folder is regulated by a built in flow control on the
Snap Folder
solenoid valve located
with other valves under the machine frame adjacent to the air regulator. This control is only for mechanism return
velocity and is used to reduce noise and wear.
