INSTRUCTIONS
8.1.
Soil samples will be collected annually or as specified by the EC.
8.2.
The field staff will acquire all necessary equipment and materials for the sampling
effort.
8.3.
The field staff will take the soil sample at the required locations or where
specified by the EC. When collecting samples, be mindful not to sample at the
exact spot as in previous years. Designate the sampling location GPS coordinates
in the field logbook.
8.4.
Latex gloves are worn to protect the sampler from residual contamination on the
hands and minimize cross contamination between samples.
8.5.
Remove the top 5 cm of soil from a 10 cm x 10 cm area using the stainless steel
shovel or take a 5 cm diameter plug 5 cm deep if using the soil sampler. Remove
any large rocks or debris from the sample.
8.6.
Place the soil in a Nalgene® sample bag or equivalent.
8.7.
Label the sample bag or equivalent using an indelible marker or prepared a label
with the location, date, and time the sample was taken and the SSTF #.
8.8.
Note pertinent information in the field sampling logbook or equivalent, including
the location, date and time of sample, description of sample location, site
conditions, GPS coordinates, and any unusual circumstances encountered during
the sampling effort.
8.9.
Fill out the necessary information on the SSTF.
8.10.
Clean the sampling equipment following SOP-E-044 before proceeding to the
next sample location.
8.11.
Continue sampling until all samples at all locations have been taken.
8.12.
For quality assurance purposes a duplicate sample will be collected at one of the
sampling locations.
8.12.1.
For the QA sample, collect double the amount or volume as for the regular
sample.
