Recording
When copying from HDD to DVD, does it record
digitally?
Yes.
Can I copy from HDD to DVD-RAM in multiple
speed?
It is not multiple speed, and it takes more time as
the image quality becomes higher. This is due to
the characteristics of MPEG2 that requires larger
amounts of data for copying higher image quality.
Consequently the file size to be transferred varies
for a program of the same length, depending on the
image quality. It takes about 16 minutes to copy an
about one hour program in the SP mode, and it
takes about half or more of the recorded time when
copying at the maximum rate with DD1 sound. The
time required for copying varies depending on the
image quality rate, sound quality, and disc
conditions. It also takes more time when the copy
source is a short program of a few minutes.
What continuous recording functions are
available for HDD and DVD?
●
A&B both-side recording
For the best image quality of 9.2 transfer rate, you
can record only for about one hour on a single-
sided 4.7-GB DVD-RAM. If you use a double-sided
9.4-GB DVD-RAM, you need to manually turn it
over after recording one side, and you will miss a
portion of the program while doing it. The Toshiba
HDD&DVD Video Recorder offers the A&B Both
Sides recording function that you can select when
programming a timer recording. The HDD
automatically starts recording about 10 minutes
before Side A of the DVD-RAM terminates, and you
can use Fast Library Copy from HDD to the other
side of DVD-RAM after the recording is completed.
Using one double sided 9.4-GB DVD-RAM disc, you
can record for about two hours at the highest image
quality. If you want to be specific about when to
turn the disc, you can pickup a convenient point
within the 10-minute overlapping portion and create
a chapter, and then perform Fast Library Copy from
the HDD to the DVD-RAM. For the unnecessary
portion at the end of Side A, you can divide it to a
separate chapter and delete it.
* This function does not automatically switch from
Side A to Side B of a DVD-RAM disc while
recording; the portion of Side B is recorded on the
HDD.
●
Relay Recording
When recording on a DVD-RAM disc, you may need
to change the disc for different programs, if you
have programmed multiple recordings. Also, if you
have left a wrong disc in the unit, or if you have not
put in a disc at all, you cannot record the program
either. The disc will not record the entire program if
the disc space is limited. The Toshiba HDD&DVD
Video Recorder offers the Relay Recording function
for these situations. The HDD automatically starts
recording 10 minutes before the DVD-RAM runs out
of its disc space or records the whole program
when a disc is not inserted in the unit, so you will
not miss any important recording opportunities.
(Recording is not performed when the HDD runs
out of space.)
When the disc label says it records for 120
minutes, does it record just 120 minutes? Can I
use a PC disc?
The label of 120 minute indicates a recording time
in the SP mode. You can record up to about six
hours on one side, if you reduce the image quality.
You can record for only about one hour, if you use
the highest image quality. The recording time may
vary depending on the image quality. You also need
to initialize the disc before using it in your Toshiba
HDD&DVD Video Recorder. Go to the DVD mode,
insert a disc, and you will get an alert message,
indicating that the disc cannot be read. Then, press
the Quick Menu button on the remote controller,
select and confirm Initialize Disc, and then select
and confirm Initialize DVD. Follow the instruction
displayed on the screen. If you use a PC disc, you
cannot record a program that is allowed for only one
copy, even if you initialize the disc.
