BENDIX/KING KT 76C TRANPONDER
with BLIND
ENCODER
SECTION 1
GENERAL
The Bendix/King
Transponder
(Type KT 76C), shown in Figure
1, is the airborne component
of an Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon
System
(ATCRBS).
The
transponder
enables
the
ATC
ground
controller
to "see" and
identify
more
readily
the
aircraft
on the
radarscope.
The blind encoder (SSD120-20)
(also shown in Figure
1) enables the transponder
to automatically
report aircraft altitude to
ATC.
The
Bendix/King
Transponder
system
consists
of
a
panel-
mounted unit and an externally-mounted
antenna.
The transponder
receives
interrogating
pulse
signals
on 1030 MHz and transmits
coded
pulse-train
reply signals
on 1090
MHz. . It is capable
of
replyin'g to Mode A (aircraft
identification)
and
also to Mode
C
(altitude reporting)
interrogations
on a selective
reply basis on any
of
4096
information
code
selections.
When
a panel-mounted
SSD120-20
Blind
Encoder
(not
part
of
KT 76C
Transponder
system) is included in the avionic configuration,
the transponder
can
provide altitude reporting in 100-foot increments
between -1000 and
+20,000 feet.
The
KT 76C
features
microprocessor
and
LSI
(Large
Scale
Integrated)
control.
Mode and code selection
are performed
using
the rotary knob and numeric buttons and all functions
including the
flight level altitude are presented
on a gas discharge
display.
All
display
segments
are automatically
dimmed
by a photocell
type
sensor.
