The brake line must run freely through the pulley to the handle. Check that all maillons are safely
screwed shut. Now check the speed system. The foot bar must be absolutely free and must not be
able to shorten the risers during launch, nor to trip you up.
After you put on your harness check that the canopy is free to open, make sure all lines are free,
all buckles of the harness are properly closed, the karabiners are properly attached and secure.
Given the right wind conditions and free airspace there is now nothing to stop you from getting
airborne.
Takeoff check list:
1. All harness buckles closed? - Helmet put on?
2. Canopy connected? - Karabiners secured?
3. Lines cleared? - Brake lines routed freely?
4. Leading edge open?
5. Free airspace all around? - Headwind?
LAUNCH TECHNIQUE
Without much physical effort the BLUE comes up easily with an even pull on the both A-risers at
the same time. In a forward launch, stretching your arms out behind you effectively elongates the
lines to the shoulders; hands grasp the risers at the level of the line links. The arms simply guide
the A-risers without exerting a pull on them. The BLUE rapidly rises above the pilot without either
getting stuck or overshooting. As soon as the canopy is vertically above the pilot the risers can be
released. If you apply the brakes by about 10 -15 cm you can, in a smooth, continuous motion, look
up and perform a careful canopy check.
This process also reduces the required takeoff speed, stabilizes the canopy and protects it from
unloading due to bumps on the ground, etc. With the canopy inflated, if lines are snagged you may
be able to correct the situation via the brakes.
If you do not succeed, the launch must be aborted immediately by pumping down one steering line
and running out parallel to the slope!
However, when everything is correct the BLUE will quickly take off as you smoothly accelerate
your run. Increase speed through the length of paces not the frequency of paces, and after lifting
off maintain an upright position so you are able to run again if necessary.
