5.6.2 TRACK
TENSIONING
WARNING
I
mproper track tensioning may cause problems that have
an impact on the entire machine. In addition, improper
track tensioning may cause the track to slide out of the
support side frame. Periodically check track tensioning.
When backing up, incorrect track tensioning may cause the
chain-drive wheel coupling to be overlapped, thus damaging
the components.
The track may loose tensioning because of the following
causes:
- normal wear of the components installed in the track mecha-
nism (rollers, drive wheels, chain and idle wheel);
- traveling from a soft and muddy soil to a hard and compact
soil (or vice versa) during machine operation.
To check track tensioning, stop the machine on a
fl
at ground,
engage the FORWARD gear and do not brake the machine.
Put an iron bar on the track shoes between the upper roller
and the idle wheel as illustrated in Fig. 63. Then, measure
the distance between the bar and the shoe top.
The track is tensioned correctly when, on its top, the section
of the chain having no support has a
fl
exure of approx. 30÷50
mm (Fig. 62).
Check and adjust in the same operating conditions as ex-
plained above.
Tension the track as instructed below.
- Take out the cover of the inspection door (1 in Fig. 63) to gain
access to the greasing nipple. Prepare a greasing pump in
the meantime.
WARNING
The grease inside is under pressure. So, the greasing nip-
ple cap may burst out. Only undo the cap by one turn.
Do not loosen any other part but the cap. Do not put your
face opposite the cap.
- Pump grease through the greasing nipple with the help of
a pump.
- To check the track tensioning, let the engine run at low
speed, let the machine move forward (along the same
distance as the track length on the ground), then stop the
machine.
