2.4 SAFETY
AT
WORK
• Before any operation is started, check the area around the machine for unusual hazardous condi-
tions.
• Identify your location when reporting an accident or
fi
re. Always keep a local emergency phone to report
any emergency condition.
• Keep one
fi
re extinguisher in the machine and another in the work area.
• Keep the machine clean and clear from
fl
ammable material such as waste, grease, oil or fuel.
• Make sure that all safety devices are in good operating condition.
• Check the soil and ground conditions in the work area. Work out the safest way to start operations. Do
not work in areas presenting a risk of landslides or rock fall.
• Make sure that no water and/or gas pipe run underneath the work area. Check for high voltage cables:
contact the public utility company and ask for HV cable location.
• Attend safety training sessions at regular intervals. All operators must become familiar with emergency
procedures.
2.4.1 OPERATION ON ROUGH TERRAIN
• Do not operate the machine close to the edge of a slope and cliff and near deep ditches. The ground
may be soft in these areas. If the ground collapses under
the machine weight or vibrations, the machine may fall in
or tip over (Fig. 5).
• After heavy rain, wind blasts and earthquakes the soil is
slippery.
• When working on embankments or near canals, the risk
exists that the machine weight and vibrations cause the
ground to collapse.
