Chapter 2: System Description
Injection Valve
A 6-port valve that is used to inject a small amount of boron reagent into the UPW sample.
Conductivity Cell
Used to measure the conductivity of the UPW sample and the conductivity change due to the reaction of
the reagent and boric acid. A thermistor incorporated into the conductivity cell measures the temperature
of the UPW sample as it passes through the cell. Conductivity is measured using a bipolar-pulsed
technique, and the conductivity electronics are calibrated by measuring a precision resistor prior to each
analysis cycle. The calibration of the conductivity cell and thermistor are both NIST traceable.
Sample Pump
A peristaltic pump that draws the sample water through the injection valve and conductivity cell.
Electronic Components
Analog Board
Receives the conductivity and temperature measurements from the conductivity cell. It contains an analog-
to-digital converter that converts the analog signals from the conductivity cell into digital signals, which are
then sent to the CPU board.
Power Control Board
Supplies power to the rest of the components within the Analyzer.
CPU Board
The board onto which the firmware is loaded. The data card also resides in a port on this board.
Backplane Board
Where the analog, power control, and CPU boards connect.
I/O Board
Contains all the input and output connections (four 4-20 mA analog outputs, one RS-232 output, two alarm
outputs, four binary outputs, a universal parallel printer port, and five binary inputs).
Data Card
A 4 MB flash memory card. The date, time, boron concentration, and temperature are stored on the data
card after each measurement. Once the data card is full, the Analyzer indicates that it is overwriting data
by displaying a “C” in the maintenance window. Data may be archived using a personal computer equipped
with a PCMCIA slot and software.
