5.
Successively reduce the entrance aperture size and iris opening while adjusting the
electron gun deflectors so that the intensity is optimal.
6.
At the end optimize the signal with the Slit6/open set and the iris fully closed.
The detector image will be a narrow stripe at angle zero, as shown in Figure 40. Check that
the stripe gets wider in symmetrical fashion, when the iris is opened.

This means that the beam of the electron gun hits the sample on the electron optical axis of
the PHOIBOS lens.
A.3.2 Adjusting the deflector/rotator lens
When you have aligned the electron gun correctly, you can adjust the deflectors in the
deflector/rotator lens system. Measure the intensity with the total intensity channel of the
Ferrum detector as described below:
1.
Connect to the PHOIBOS 1D analyzer and the SpinDetectorControl in Device
Controls in Prodigy.
2.
Set the electron gun at the optimum position found in Section A.3.1.
3.
In the Experiment Editor, open the Template PHOIBOS 1D Adjustment.
4.
Start a fixed energy scan for E
kin
= 40 eV and E
p
= 20 eV. Operate the analyzer in the
LAD mode. Enable the overwrite mode.
