the 8700i’s serial port. (These services are also used to upgrade your 8700i’s firmware
when updates are available from Orban.) The exact process will vary, depending on
how you wish to set up the communications. That is:

If you want to communicate through a local PC, you will need to establish a
connection between a serial (COM) port of the PC and the COM port of your
8700i through a null modem cable (supplied with your 8700i). Then use Win-
dows Direct Serial Connect to make the basic connection. Alternatively, you can
use a crossover Ethernet cable to communicate to your PC through its Ethernet
port. Only the latter is supported for Windows Vista and higher.

If you want to communicate through a pair of modems, you will use the Win-
dows Dial-Up networking service to make the connection.
You must install the appropriate communications services in Windows (if they are
not already installed) before you can run 8700i Remote software.
You may there-
fore need to have access to the Windows install disk(s)—or have their image cop-
ied onto your computer’s hard drive—before you attempt to use the 8700i up-
date or remote applications

In all cases, regardless of whether your PC communicates to the 8700i
through its serial port or Ethernet connector, it uses the ppp and the
TCP/IP protocols to communicate with the 8700i.
Check Hardware Requirements
To connect your PC to your 8700i, regardless of the method you choose, you will
need the following:

Orban 8700i OPTIMOD-FM.

If connecting by serial cable: a null modem cable (also called a “reverse” cable),
supplied by Orban with your 8700i when it was shipped. This cable has DB9 fe-
male connectors at both ends for connecting the 8700i to the serial port on your
computer. If your computer has a DB25 connector, you will need to obtain an
adapter.

If connecting by modem: a 3Com / U.S. Robotics® 56kbps fax modem EXT and
normal (not null) modem cable for the 8700i side of the connection. Note that
Orban Customer Service does not support any other type of modem for connect-
ing to the 8700i although many modems will work.

If connecting by network: a standard Ethernet cable (with RJ45 connectors) to
connect to a network hub or router, or a crossover Ethernet cable to connect di-
rectly to your PC’s Ethernet jack.

PC running Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10.
8700i PC Remote and 8700i Updater will not run on older Windows ver-
sions.
