Glossary
acid content
The pH, or the acidity/alkalinity of paper. The acid
content is determined by the Technical Association
of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) cold extrac-
tion method.
applications
A software program that performs a specific task
such as creating a spreadsheet or graphics.
ascent line
The line defined by the tops of the capital letters in
text.
ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Inter-
change. This standard defines character set codes
that are used for data interchange between data
terminal equipment.
ash content
The inorganic residue remaining after ignition used
to remove combustibles and volatile compounds.
attribute
Characteristics of a font. These include orientation,
symbol set, spacing, pitch, point size, style, stroke,
and typeface.
back up
To make a spare copy of a disk or file on a disk.
Backing up your disks and files ensures that you
won’t lose information if the original is lost or
damaged.
basis weight
In English units, basis weight is the weight of 500
sheets of standard size paper. It is measured as the
weight (in grams) of one square meter of paper.
baud
The rate of data transmission, measured in bits per
second.
