STARTING COLD ENGINE
IMPORTANT: Check fluid levels before starting engine. Refer to Maintenance
Schedule.
1. Turn on and operate the engine compartment bilge blower (if equipped) for five minutes.
Or, open engine hatch to air out bilge before attempting to start engine.
2. Place control handle in NEUTRAL.
3. If engine has not been run for a period of time and will not readily start with the standard
starting procedure, there is a hand pump/primer located on the engine to improve initial fuel
supply. Refer to Maintenance - Fuel System, Priming Fuel System and follow instructions.
4. Follow the appropriate starting procedure a. or b.:
a.
Indicator lamp models:
turn the key switch to the RUN position to activate the glow
plugs. The preheat cycle usually lasts 10 to 15 seconds. Observe the preheat
indicator (glow plug) lamp. The lamp should be illuminated when the engine cylinder
temperature is too low to sustain combustion. The engine should be started only
after the lamp goes off.
NOTE:
The preheat devices (glow plugs) should operate at temperatures lower than 50
degrees C (122 degrees F). An engine coolant temperature sensor will automatically control
activation and duration of preheat cycle.
b.
Wait to start models:
turn the key switch to the RUN position to activate the glow
plugs. Wait five seconds for the preheat cycle. The engine should be started only
after the five second wait to start period has ended.
NOTE:
The preheat devices (glow plugs) should operate at temperatures lower than 80
degrees C (176 degrees F). An engine coolant temperature sensor will automatically control
activation and duration of preheat cycle.
IMPORTANT: After starting, the key switch should NOT be returned to the OFF
position during engine operation. If the starter switch is in the OFF position and the
engine is operating, the battery will not be charged, audio warning alarms will not be
operational in the event of trouble and accessories may not operate.
5. Turn key switch to START position. Release key when the engine starts. Allow switch to
return to RUN position. Do not operate the engine with the switch in the OFF position without
first shutting down the engine, using the engine stop switch.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to engage the starter while the engine is running as this will lead to
starter pinion and ring gear damage.
6. Ensure all instrumentation is functioning properly and indicating normal readings.
Ensure charge indicator and oil pressure warning lamps go off. Check oil pressure gauge
immediately after engine starts. If oil pressure is not within specified range (refer to
Specifications), stop the engine, locate and correct the problem, or see your local
auathorized Cummins MerCruiser Diesel dealer / distributor if you are unable to determine
the problem.
CAUTION
Do not increase the engine speed until the oil pressure gauge indicates normal.
Shut the engine down if oil pressure does not register on the gauge within 20 to 30
seconds after start.
