Fuel
Information on fuel grades for vehicles with
a petrol engine
Observe the notes on operating fluids
(
→
page 452).
*
NOTE Damage caused by the wrong fuel
Even small amounts of the wrong fuel could
result in damage to the fuel system, the
engine and the emission control system.
#
Only refuel using premium-grade unlea‐
ded fuel that conforms to EN 228, or an
equivalent specification.
Fuel of this specification may contain up to
10 % ethanol. Your vehicle is suitable for use
with E10 fuel.
Do not refuel using:
R
Diesel
R
E85, E100
R
Petrol containing methanol (M15, M30,
M85, M100)
R
Petrol with additives containing metal
If you accidentally refuel with the wrong fuel:
#
Do not switch the ignition on.
#
Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
If the available fuel is not sufficiently low in sul‐
phur, this can produce unpleasant odours.
E 200, E 250, E 400 4MATIC: observe the infor‐
mation on sulphur content on the instruction
label in the fuel filler flap:
*
NOTE Damage to the emission control
system caused by fuel with a too high
sulphur content
#
Only use sulphur-free fuel (sulphur con‐
tent ≤ 10 ppm).
All models: the recommended octane number
for your vehicle can be found on the instruction
label in the fuel filler flap (
→
page 180).
As a temporary measure, if the recommended
fuel is not available, you may also use regular
unleaded petrol with at least:
R
E 250: 93 RON
R
All other models: 91 RON
This may reduce engine output and increase fuel
consumption.
Never refuel using petrol with a lower RON.
Further information on fuel can be found:
