The First 1500 km /1000 M iles
Special O perating C onditions
The more cautiously you treat your
engine during the break-in period,
the more satisfied you w ill be w ith
its perform ance later on. Therefore,
drive your vehicle during the first
1500 km / 1000 miles at moderate
vehicle and engine speeds.
During this period, avoid heavy
loads (full th ro ttle driving) and high
RPMs (no m ore than 2/ 3 o f m axi
mum permissible speed in each
gear) and do not force the engine
to labor at low engine speed.
S hift dow n in good tim e!
On vehicles w ith autom atic trans
mission, avoid accelerating by kick-
dow n. It is not recommended to
brake vehicle by means of m anu
ally shifting to a low er gear. W e re
com m end to select positions "S "
or "L " only at m oderate speeds (for
hill driving).
A fte r 1500 k m /1000 miles, speeds
may gradually be increased to the
permissible m axim um .
W in te r Driving
Have your car w interized in a
MERCEDES-BENZ service station
before the onset of w inter.
• Engine oil change: If no "all-
year round" engine oil is used,
fill w ith recomm ended w inte r
oil. For viscosity and capacity,
refer to "Fuels, Coolants, Lu
bricants, etc. and last page".
• For diesel fuels, refer to page 86
and last page.
• Antifreeze in the coolant:
Check antifreeze protection
periodically. For capacity refer
to "Fuels, Coolants, Lubricants,
e tc.".
• A d ditive in the w indshield
w asher system: A dd w indshield
w asher solvent to the w ater in
the w indshield w asher system.
• Test battery: B atteiy capacity
drops w ith decreasing am bient
tem perature. A w ell charged
battery ensures that the engine
can always be started, even at
low am bient temperatures.
• Tires: For the cold season we
recom m end m ounting M + S
radial-ply tires on all wheels.
Permissible to p speed for
M + S radial-ply tires is
160 k m /h /100 m iles/h.
