S ta rtin g and Turning o ff th e Engine
Turn key clockw ise to the stop to
start the engine. Release key only
w hen the engine fires regularly.
W hen the engine is at operating
tem perature (coolant tem perature
above approx. + 7 0 ° C / + 158° F),
the preglow ing indicator lamp
comes on only briefly. The engine
can be started im m ediately.
A t am bient tem peratures below
0° C/32° F and w ith the engine
cold, com pletely depress acceler
ator and clutch pedal w hile s ta rt
ing. A ctuate starter until the engine
fires regularly and engine speed
rises. Then ease o ff the accelerator
slowly. Cranking tim es o f up to
one m inute w ill not do any harm
to the starter.
A t am bient tem peratures o f less
than —20° C / —4° F, depress the
accelerator three tim es prior to
starting.
Idle Speed A djustm ent:
Turn idle speed adjuster clockw ise
until the engine w ill just run
sm oothly. The idle speed adjuster
should be turned clockw ise to the
stop (normal position) at the latest
w hen the coolant has reached a
tem perature o f + 6 0 ° C / + 140° F,
Check reading on oil pressure
gauge im m ediately after starting
the engine. In a very cold engine
the oil pressure w ill only rise
slow ly, some tim e after the engine
has started. Do not speed up the
engine before pressure is regis
tered on the oil pressure gauge.
The charge ind icato r lamp m ust
go out as soon as the engine has
started.
Note:
If the preglow ing indicator lamp
flashes, the preglow ing system is
defective. Have the preglow ing
system inspected at a MERCEDES-
BENZ service station.
T u rn in g o ff
Turn key in steering lock to posi-
tio n " 0 " and remove only w hen the
vehicle has stopped.
Should the engine continue to
operate in steering lock posi
tion “ 0", refer to page 59.
W ith very high coolant tem pera
tures (e. g. after driving on steep
inclines), do not shut dow n the
engine im m ediately but allow to
run at slightly increased idle speed
fo r another 1 — 2 m inutes approxi
mately.
