Coolants
The coolant is a m ixture o f w ater
and antifreeze. In production, the
cooling system is filled w ith an anti-
freeze-water m ixture o ffe ring pro
tection to approx. —30° C /—22° F.
The red mark on the tem perature
gauge in the instrum ent cluster is
matched to this antifreeze-w ater
m ixture (approx. boiling point
125° C/2570 F). The protection
against corrosion is also ensured
by this m ixture m aking it unnec
essary to add a corrosion
inhibitor.
The coolant remains in the cooling
system all year round and m ust be
renewed after 2 years at the latest.
If coolant has leaked from the c o o l
ing system, replace the missing
q uantity w ith w ater and a recom
mended brand o f antifreeze.
For normal replenishm ent (due to
evaporation o f water) plain w ater
w ill do.
The w ater should be clean, s o ft to
medium soft and contain a m in i
mum am ount o f scale form ing
minerals (potable w ater quality).
The coolant m ixture should always
contain enough antifreeze to en
sure protection to a m inim um o f
- 2 0 ° C / —4° F.
If antifreeze is not available, add a
corrosion inh ibito r to the cooling
w ater to ensure proper protection
against corrosion. To trea t the c o o l
ing w ater, do not use m ore than
1
% (10 cm 3/l) o f a recom m ended
corrosion inhibitor.
W ith o u t antifreeze in the cooling
system, the w ater already starts
boiling at approx. 118° C/224° F,
w hich means th a t the p ointer o f
the tem perature gauge in the
instrum ent cluster may still be
below the red mark.

Your vehicle contains a num ber o f
alum inum parts. The use o f alu
m inum com ponents in m otor
vehicle engines necessitates th at
antifreeze/coolant used in such
engines be specifically form ulated
to protect the alum inum parts.
(Failure to use such antifreeze/
coolant may result in a s ig n ifica n t
ly shortened service life.)
W hile there may be a num ber o f
antifreeze/coolants available w hich
w ill provide the requisite protec
tion, all such products have not
been tested fo r MERCEDES-BENZ
vehicles. The fo llo w in g products,
however, are deemed suitable for
use in your car: MERCEDES-BENZ
Anti-Freeze and Sum m er Coolant.
Prior to the onset o f the cold
season, check th e coolant fo r its
resistance to cold. Repeat this
check during the cold spell.
Regular testing o f the antifreeze
concentration is carried o u t only at
each MERCEDES-BENZ m ain
tenance service.
