Chapter 3. Server hardware setup
To set up the server, install any options that have been purchased, cable the server, configure and update
the firmware, and install the operating system.
The server setup procedure varies depending on the configuration of the server when it was delivered. In
some cases, the server is fully configured and you just need to connect the server to the network and an ac
power source, and then you can power on the server. In other cases, the server needs to have hardware
options installed, requires hardware and firmware configuration, and requires an operating system to be
installed.
Server setup procedure
The following steps describe the general procedure for setting up a server:
1. Unpack the server package.
2. If necessary, install any required hardware or server options. See the related topics in Chapter 4
“Hardware replacement procedures” on page 25.
3. Install the server into a standard rack cabinet by using the rail kit shipped with the server. See the Rack
Installation Guide that comes with optional rail kit.
4. Connect the Ethernet cables and power cords to the server. See “Front view” on page 7 and “Rear view”
on page 11 to locate the connectors.
5. Power on the server. See “Power on the server” on page 23.
6. Validate that the server hardware was set up successfully. Make sure that all LEDs are in normal states.
7. Configure the system.
Power on the server
After the server performs a short self-test (power status LED flashes quickly) when connected to input power,
it enters a standby state (power status LED flashes once per second).
The server can be turned on (power LED on) in any of the following ways:
• You can press the power button.
• The server can restart automatically after a power interruption.
• The server can respond to remote power-on requests sent to the BMC.

Power off the server
The server remains in a standby state when it is connected to a power source, allowing the BMC to respond
to remote power-on requests. To remove all power from the server (power status LED off), you must
disconnect all power cables.
To place the server in a standby state (power status LED flashes once per second):
Note: The BMC can place the server in a standby state as an automatic response to a critical system failure.
• Start an orderly shutdown using the operating system (if supported by your operating system).
• Press the power button to start an orderly shutdown (if supported by your operating system).
