Blom-Singer® Indwelling Valved/Plug Insert
2. Attach the safety hole in the neck strap on the Indwelling
Valved/Plug Insert securely over the safety peg on the inserter
tool as shown in diagram 4. This should prevent inadvertent
dislodgment of the Indwelling Valved/Plug Insert off the inserter
tool during insertion into the voice prosthesis. (Indwelling Valved
Insert: Place the indwelling insert holder with attached Indwelling
Valved Insert around the neck.)
3. Hold the end of the inserter tool as shown in diagrams 5A and
5B, and align the top of the Indwelling Valved/Plug Insert partially
inside the voice prosthesis with the neck strap oriented upwards,
diagrams 6A and 6B.
4. Carefully and gently insert the Indwelling Valved/Plug Insert
until it is fully inserted and positioned flush with the voice
prosthesis (diagram 7).
Never force the Indwelling Valved Insert or Plug Insert into the
voice prosthesis. Caution: If the device does not insert easily
on the first attempt, do not continue to try to insert it. Should
you experience repeated difficulty in managing the Indwelling
Valved Insert or Plug Insert, contact your physician/clinician as
soon as possible.
Caution: Plug Insert: The Plug Insert will not fully insert into a
4mm size voice prosthesis due to the shorter length of the voice
prosthesis shaft. A small portion of the Plug will extend from the
entrance of the voice prosthesis as shown in diagram 8. It is very
important to not insert the Plug beyond this point of noticeable
resistance. Doing so could result in pushing the voice prosthesis
into the esophagus. See Warning in step 6 below.
5. After confirming the Indwelling Valved/Plug Insert is securely
in place and fully inserted, the inserter tool should be carefully
removed.
6. Hold the inserter tool and the neck strap together firmly in
one hand. Carefully lift the neck strap off the safety peg on the
inserter tool. Hold the neck strap against your neck while slowly
and gently withdrawing the inserter tool with a twisting motion
(diagram 9).
Warning: Caution should be exercised when removing the
inserter tool to avoid accidental displacement of the Indwelling
