A
Address
This is the "name" of the bus participant. All
participants need a unique address so that the
signals can be exchanged without problem.
Application software
Software specific to the application,
implemented by the machine manufacturer,
generally containing logic sequences, limits
and expressions that control the appropriate
inputs, outputs, calculations and decisions

Architecture
Specific configuration of hardware and
software elements in a system.

Baud
Baud, abbrev.: Bd = unit for the data
transmission speed. Do not confuse baud with
"bits per second" (bps, bits/s). Baud indicates
the number of changes of state (steps, cycles)
per second over a transmission length. But it is
not defined how many bits per step are
transmitted. The name baud can be traced
back to the French inventor J. M. Baudot
whose code was used for telex machines.

CAN
CAN = C ontroller A rea N etwork
CAN is a priority controlled fieldbus system for
larger data volumes. It is available in different
variants, e.g. "CANopen" or "CAN in
Automation" (CiA).
Category (CAT)
Classification of the safety-related parts of a
control system in respect of their resistance to
faults and their subsequent behaviour in the
fault condition. This safety is achieved by the
structural arrangement of the parts, fault
detection and/or by their reliability.
