Chapter 9. Working with ProtecTIER for FSI
This topic describes how to manage and work with ProtecTIER in a File System
Interface (FSI) environment.
ProtecTIER for FSI presents ProtecTIER as a network attached storage (NAS)
backup target capable of using the HyperFactor algorithm, as well as ProtecTIER
native replication bandwidth reduction techniques for storing and replicating
deduplicated data to make disk backup and WAN vaulting more cost effective. FSI
enables backup servers running backup applications to connect over IP networks
to ProtecTIER, without the use of Fibre Channel connectivity, allowing customers
to use their existing tools and capabilities to integrate a ProtecTIER NAS based
backup target into their environment.
ProtecTIER for FSI supports two file systems and network protocols: the NFS and
the CIFS.
NFS, or Network File System, is used mostly for Linux or Unix-based operating
systems and allows for remote access. Files in one computer can be viewed or
edited from a remote computer.
CIFS, or Common Internet File System, file sharing is Windows-based. The CIFS
protocol allows joint sharing of multiples devices such as printers, files, and even
serial ports, among various users and administrators. The CIFS protocol supports
remote mounts over TCP/IP using the samba server message block (SMB) protocol.
Note:
ProtecTIER FSI support is intended for backup images produced by backup
applications, and not for primary storage deduplication.
FSI network configuration for the ProtecTIER backup server
This section provides information on FSI network configuration for the ProtecTIER
backup server and includes the scopes and objectives, definitions and acronyms,
information on bonding, and procedures for setting up the network with
ProtecTIER.
Terms and abbreviations
This topic defines terms and abbreviations that are relevant to network
configuration, in general.
Bonding
A method for grouping several physical adapters into a single virtual
adapter for the purpose of load sharing and throughput enhancement.
“Bonding” is the term typically used in Linux/Unix operating systems.
Teaming
An alternate term for bonding, typically used in Microsoft operating
systems.
Link aggregation
A method for grouping several interfaces into a single virtual interface, for
the purpose of load sharing between the interfaces.
IEEE 802.3ad
IEEE standard for Link Aggregation for LAN connectivity.
