Symptom-to-FRU index
The Symptom-to-FRU index lists error symptoms and possible causes. The
most likely cause is listed first. Always begin with “General checkout” on
page 104. See “Chapter 1. IBM PC Enhanced Diagnostics error codes” on
page 1 when running diagnostics. This index can also be used to help you
decide which FRUs to have available when servicing a computer. If you are
unable to correct the problem using this index, go to “Undetermined
problems” on page 171.
Notes:
1.
If you have both an error message and an incorrect audio response,
diagnose the error message first.
2.
If you cannot run the diagnostic tests or you get a diagnostic error code
when running a test, but did receive a POST error message, diagnose the
POST error message first.
3.
If you did not receive any error message, look for a description of your
error symptoms in the first part of this index.
4.
Check all power supply voltages before you replace the system board. (See
“Power supply” on page 108.)
5.
Check the hard disk drive jumper settings before you replace a hard disk
drive. (See “Hard disk drive jumper settings” on page 128.)
Important:
1.
Some errors are indicated with a series of beep codes (see
“Beep symptoms”).
Types 6058/6059/6269/6578/6579 computers default to come
up quiet (no beep and no memory count and checkpoint code
display) when no errors are detected by POST. To enable beep
and memory count and checkpoint code display when a
successful POST occurs, do the following:
a.
Select
Start Options
in the Configuration/Setup Utility
program (see“Setup Utility program” on page 122).
b.
Set
Power-On Self-Test
to
Enhanced
.
2.
The processor is a separate FRU from the system board; the
processor is not included with the system board FRU.
Beep symptoms
Beep symptoms are short tones or a series of short tones separated by pauses
(intervals without sound). See the following examples.
