Drive Cleaning Issues
Table 4-7 lists circumstances that can cause a drive cleaning message,
, to
appear when a tape cartridge may be at fault. Note that:
•
The tape drives
do not require scheduled cleaning maintenance
.
Excessive use of the cleaning cartridge can cause unnecessary wear on
the drive head.
•
After 20 cleaning cycles, the cleaning cartridge must be replaced.

A new data tape
cartridge is used and a
drive cleaning
message displays.
Debris from the tape
manufacturing process
has been deposited on
the drive head.
Clean the drive using the tape library
cleaning procedure in “Cleaning the Tape
Drives” on page 4-23.
If the message displays again within a
short amount of time, return the cartridge
for a warranty replacement.
An older,
frequently-used data
tape cartridge is
loaded and a drive
cleaning message
displays.
Dust from frequent tape
loads and unloads has
most likely built up on
the tape cartridge and
was deposited on the
drive head.
Clean the
outside
of the tape cartridge
using a damp cloth.
Clean the tape drive using the tape drive
cleaning procedure in “Cleaning the Tape
Drives” on page 4-23.
An older, frequently
used tape causes a
cleaning message to
display for the second
time.
The tape is probably
damaged. (Damaged
cartridges can cause
unnecessary use of the
cleaning cartridge.)
Clear the error message by unloading and
then reloading the problem tape cartridge.
Back up data from the damaged cartridge
to another tape cartridge and discard the
damaged one.
Cleaning errors do not
go away after three
cleaning cycles.
Debris has been
deposited on the head of
the drive in such a way
that cleaning will not
remove it.
Contact an HP qualified service
representative. The drive may need to be
replaced.
